Face and Body: Nessa's Naturals

The first and foremost thing to remember as you start on the green path through life is that NO product is perfect. You will likely be able to find someone to argue the effectiveness or problems with at least one ingredient in every product you will find. Does this mean that these ingredients are necessarily dangerous to you when properly used? No. This is where information meets intelligence, you must decide for yourself if the product falls within your personal acceptance policy.

Even the most well-meaning organizations, such as EWG, who we look to in order to assist us in deciphering the ever-evolving evidence against ingredients, have their downfalls. In many cases, certain ingredients are ranked higher {more dangerous} than they actually are in normal use conditions simply because they can be toxic in higher concentrations, during different use applications, contaminated from some suppliers while not others, etc. It is up to you, as an individual, to figure out where you draw the boundary line as to what you find acceptable to be exposed to.

With this said, I'd like to encourage you to never stop learning! It is the constant search for information that will aid you most in your progress to going green. As you continue to develop your own personal boundaries and green intelligence, you will figure out what fits best into your life, what is realistic, and what is not, for you. And to remember, the human body is an amazing machine - well built to deal with small amounts of just about everything found in nature. So yes, while honeysuckle and soy, for example, may cause slight endocrine disruption temporarily as they mimic estrogen, our bodies can filter this out rather quickly too - it is not bioaccumulative {it doesn't build up in our bodies}. And while some minerals can cause skin irritation, long term damage is unlikely. What we urge you to focus on are the 'unnatural' additives, synthetics, lab-created ingredients (and manipulated natural ingredients such as GMO genetically modified & nanoparticles) sometimes labeled as 'natural'...these mutants are not something our bodies have been trained to handle, these are more likely to cause damage than ingredients our bodies have adapted to over thousands of years!

And with this introduction, I introduce you to Nessa's Naturals product line. This small company produces body and face products, including cosmetics, which are a good first step for those of you who are still using traditional products and are looking to take a step in the right direction. Nessa's Naturals offers simple ingredients and has verified the purity of their vitamin e and grapefruit seed extract to be free of contamination, but they also offer synthetic options for fragrance and flavoring oils. If you are ready to go totally natural, they also offer synthetic-free options such as those we reviewed! Recommended are the Coco Pep Lip Balm and Dry Oil Mist with Essential Oils!

First off, let me start off by saying I’m not HUGE into lipstick, I’m a straight lip balm kinda gal. But I tried this product in “winterberry “ and I've got to say the color is GREAT for the fall and holiday season. Plus, it would look good with just about any skin tone or hair color, it's very neutral pretty!

The gloss has thicker consistency than most other brands of lip gloss, but it’s not sticky (which is the main reason why I don’t normally wear lip gloss) so it stays in place and doesn't make a mess of your hair when it briskly blows by. Another little bonus with this gloss is the YUMMY berry flavor, it totally reminded me that I was wearing is and renewed that feeling of "feeling pretty"!!

Available in 12 fabulously shimmery shades, there are so many possible combinations to beautify your lips and your day!

NaturalJoyBeauty.com is a wonderful store that not only offers the best and safest products, but they are educated and able to answer many of the questions you may have! They are also able to offer excellent product suggestions based on your preferences and to personalize recommendations based on what would work best for you. Not only is their service friendly and truly catered to the client, but their product offerings are tremendous in the world of green, eco-friendly, and non-toxic cosmetic choices!

We received many wonderful samples, so I'll just give a run-down on our favorites and let you know what exactly we liked about each of them! As you may have guessed, two of our favorites are the above featured products by Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques. As you read, you'll notice that you can click on our favorites to read more about them, including the ingredients and pricing.

The creme concealer featured above is like my long-lost love...I've been searching for an effective under-eye concealer for my "mommy" circles and here it is! It goes on smooth and creamy, blends flawlessly into my skin, and stays the entire day without drying out! It stays soft to the touch on my skin, much like a moisturizer.

They carry a wide array of colorful eye colours, all which smoothly glide onto the eye area without drying out the skin. We played with different combinations and found they were all beautiful, each providing a different style. My favorite ended up being the classic "sunglow" with "taupe" in the crease -- just the right amount of natural highlight to the eye! I did note that some shades seemed to make my eyes itch as the day wore on, but perhaps this was just a fluke - I did want to mention it in case this is a common issue for you with eye shadows, it is not normally an issue for me so perhaps it was just coincidence.

We also tried a mascara by Real Purity that worked quite well, although I must say that I prefer the thickening effect of the Earth's Beauty mascara instead (which lucky for me, NaturalJoyBeauty.com also carries)! The Real Purity mascara would work great for someone looking for length rather than thickness of their lashes. It lasts all day, but isn't for someone who rubs their eyes often as it will smudge if rubbed.

If you're looking for an eye liner pencil that provides a firm tip and soft black (almost gray) finish and stays put all day long, check out this one!  We were really happy with it's performance as an eye liner, though we prefer a cake liner - here is the one that has won us over!! It can be applied wet or dry, depending on whether you'd like a smoky look or defined line!

Finally, we've found a wonderful lipstick that NaturalJoyBeauty.com carries -- the shade we tried and like is called "Chianti" and it goes on smoothly, and the best part is that a little bit goes a long way (great value at $9.99)! It tastes like berries and lasts 1-3 hours before reapplication is required.

With so many product options and special offers to boot, this is one store I can't say enough good things about! Check them out and let Joy know ecoSAFE sent you!

Cosmetics: Ava Anderson Non-Toxic

One of the inconveniences of going green and trying to be non-toxic is that rarely is there a one stop shop where you can trust every product from a single company. It is fairly unusual to find a company in which all of their products are ranked as safe on the EWG Skin Deep Database. Well, ladies, today is your lucky day...today we bring you Ava Anderson Non-Toxic, a company that offers only the safest in skin care and cosmetics!

The folks over at Ava Anderson Non-Toxic sent us a wide array of their absolutely delicious products to try and try we did...over and over and over again with great pleasure!  And although all of the ingredients checked out as safe...we had one lingering concern we asked Ava to address: nanoparticles.

Nano-particles are altered particles that are so teeny-tiny that some studies have shown them penetrating skin cells and actually altering DNA and other functions of the cells. Scientists fear this may lead to cancer and other significant problems. Currently, there are no requirements in the US for products containing nano-particles to be labeled as such; much like there is no requirement for products containing genetically modified organisms (GMO) either. Unless you're up to be a lab rat, which we're not, we highly recommend contacting manufacturers before purchasing their products to inquire about their use of nano-particles. As for Ava and her products, she takes a strong stance against nano-particles.

"We do not use nanoparticles. From what we have read nanos are very dangerous. They are so small they have found them traveling to the brain.  I once read a report that suggested nano particles would someday be shown to have been a huge disastrous experiment.  We certainly do not want any part of that."
~Ava Anderson, Founder of Ava Anderson Non-Toxic

Having previously fallen for the scrumptiously scented (no synthetic scents added) Ava Anderson Non-Toxic makeup remover pads, I decided to try something new for the "before and after" photos for this review. The "before" photos feature the Ava light foundation, blush, lipstick, lip gloss, and a Zosimos black eyeliner. The "after" photos show not only how well the makeup hides blemishes, but also how well the makeup remover pads work! I'll include a list of everything used in the photos below....

Limited Time Special: Buy the face set (foundation, blush, & brush) and receive a FREE product!!

Light Foundation
$36.50 US

The formulas are lightweight and do not feel caked on. It didn't feel like I was wearing makeup; but the best part was that it didn't look like I was wearing any either! Did I mention that the main ingredient, French Clay, actually absorbs toxins from the skin?

Pretty in Pink Blush
$18.95 US
A little of the blush goes a very long way...just a dab on the brush highlighted both of my cheeks and my brow bone!

Cottage Plum Lipstick
 $9.95 US
Glides on smooth, enriching the lips with essential nutrients while adding a subtle burst of color!

Tutu Lip Gloss
$8.95 US
This mint flavored gloss is super shiny but ultra sheer, so don't let the bright colors fool you...it goes on much more natural than it appears!

                                                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had read mixed reviews on the Suki tinted active moisturizer, so I decided to try it for myself to help our readers decipher fact from fiction. Upon opening the box, I noticed a "warning box" on the side flap...this peaked my attention as I know Suki is amongst the highest quality, natural products that exist on the market today. The warning states that for proper application, you must read the enclosed application directions included inside the box -- effectively, they printed a bold warning to "read directions before use." This immediately opened my eyes to the previous reviews I had read on this product and right away I began to realize, most of those reviewers likely skipped reading the directions before use, hence their dissatisfying results. So just as I was always taught in school all those years ago, reading the directions before taking action is ALWAYS a good idea...even in the adult world!
The directions for application are rather simple, but important, because this "foundation-type" product is not applied like any other foundation you've ever applied. In fact, it is kind of awkward at first and I for one felt very silly doing it, but the results were gorgeous so I really don't care how I look in the privacy of my own home while applying this. Here are the actual directions for application:
  • pump 1-2 drops onto the back of your hand
  • use your hands + smooth into the complexion, blending up toward the hairline + downward under the jawbone
  • for fairer complexions – add to your favorite suki® moisturizer, blending together before applying to customize color
  • for olive to darker complexions – on freshly moisturized skin, apply moderate amount of product to entire face + blend out toward hairline + down past chin + neck for even coverage
  • Is it a bit tricky to use the back of your hands during foundation application? Yes. Is it impossible? Not even close. Is the end result worth the effort of trying something new? Definitely!
    Suki tinted active moisturizer goes on smooth just like their facial lotion, it is lightweight, not oily/greasy, and blends into your skin. I was a bit hesitant to apply it to my face seeing the "oompa loompa" orange coloring of the lotion on the back of my hand, but I hung in with a little faith and amazingly enough, it blended perfectly onto my face! In fact, I didn't even need to adjust the color with additional moisturizer, per the directions. This is by no means a full-coverage foundation, you will not feel it on your face and it is not going to provide coverage for freckles, large blemishes, dark age spots, etc. However, what it DOES do is smooth your skin tone evenly across your entire face, adding a healthy glow and overall look of wellness. The best part is that you are healing your skin rather than damaging it while wearing Suki tinted active moisturizer...it is actually contributing to your natural beauty!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Scrumptiously Yummy. These are the 2 words that come to mind when I think about the Ava Anderson Non-Toxic makeup remover pads! Odd, you may think, unless you have had the pleasure of smelling this truly deliciously (and naturally) scented product! To be honest, if they made this into a spray, it would be my signature scent- and I'm somewhat tempted to apply makeup remover on my wrists before leaving the house until they come out with the perfume!

    On top of it's fragrant allure, this product is truly effective, safe, and natural! I've had the great pleasure of testing it over and over again (in the name of science, of course) against every possible cosmetic I could think of...and every time, it took only a matter of seconds to completely cleanse my skin of makeup. To show you how effective a single pad is, I applied Ava Anderson lip gloss, lipstick, and 2 other brands of eye liners on my inner arm and videoed the removal, which only took 3 gentle wipes to remove all traces of all the makeup. Unfortunately, linux is not supporting transfer of video from my camera to my computer currently so I'm unable to post the video. I can tell you there is very little effort when removing makeup using Ava Anderson Non-Toxic makeup remover pads - there is no tugging, pulling, or pressing - no irritation, no mess. This is one product that is a necessity for anyone wearing makeup!

    Cosmetics: Zosimos Botanicals Eye & Lip Pencils

    My pick for the "Two Minute Transformation" from Blah to Ahh!

    Vegan. Organic. Absolutely gorgeous. EWG safety-rated.

    Being the mommy of 3 little ones, I don't always have time for myself...and when I do, it usually involves life-sustaining activities such as eating and drinking. I'm always up for products which make me feel womanly without a lot of effort and gorgeous without spending a lot of green to go green!

    This morning I decided to do a little makeover on myself...of course, it had to be reasonable, meaning it had to be minimal in products and time with maximum amount of transformation. I allowed myself 2 products and 2 minutes to see what effect I could create within a reality-based situation for any mommy who has kids tugging on her leg while she is getting ready, others screaming in the other room for help tying their shoes, and another begging to nurse one last time before we head out for groceries.

    The 2 products I chose to use were Zosimos Botanicals Vegan Eye Liner in Black Shimmer and Zosimos Botanicals Vegan Lip Liner in Cinnamon. No other products were used. I took 2 before photos and set the timer for 2 minutes....then I took 2 after photos, here they are:

    I was absolutely amazed that there was such a difference in using just a little bit of eye and lip liner! It was an instant perk-me-up moment and I instantly felt much better, especially knowing that this is do-able on a daily basis, no matter what kiddie crisis is happening!

    The eye liner in Black Shimmer has a shimmery, glittery effect and blended really well for a smoky eye look. The pencil was capable of defined or smoky lines and wore well for several hours. I especially liked how soft the eye liner felt against my sensitive skin, I didn't need to tug whatsoever, it glided on so smoothly and softly.

    The lip liner in Cinnamon went on easily and almost felt creamy on my lips. It lasted through drinking my entire Kleen Kanteen worth of water, and several hours later, finally wore off as I ate my lunch. I have to say, this is the longest a lip liner has ever lasted on me and there was absolutely no drying of my lips as I am used to from traditional lip cosmetic products.
    Black Shimmer Eye Pencil ($13) Ingredients: Organic Simmondia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil; Organic Castor Oil; Castor Wax; Wildcrafted Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax; Mica; Iron Oxides; Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Oleoresin

    Cinnamon Eye Pencil ($13) Ingredients: Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil; Wildcrafted Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax; Organic Castor Oil; Castor Wax; Mica; Organic Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Oil

    Foundation: Aubrey Organics Silken Earth

    Silky skin with full coverage that lasts all day!

    Having always had very dry skin, I was never too excited at the idea of putting powder on my face. Afterall, powder is only for people with oily skin, right? Wrong. Amazingly enough, Aubrey Organics has created a natural loose powder foundation that blends softly onto your skin without looking caked on. Best of all, the coverage lasts all day long, any day of the year!

    Made from tapioca, rice, and silk amongst other natural ingredients, this foundation brushes on flawlessly. I had wondered as to why they chose to call it "silken earth" -- but a simple touch to my face after application leads me to the answer -- it actually makes your skin feel silky! I've also found that a little bit goes a long way, this should last at least 6-9 months with daily use.

    On a final note, I must mention the yummy scent that naturally occurs with Aubrey Organics Silken Earth foundations! It reminds me of a dessert bar filled with cinnamon treats...it is absolutely delicious to smell (though I only smell it during application).

    Cosmetics: Earth's Beauty Concealer

    Nano-particle free! All natural concealer, works marvelously to hide dark undereye circles!

    Ask any makeup artist what the one thing is that they couldn't live without and you'll get a single word answer every time: CONCEALER! This little concoction is the single most important cosmetic you can own. It conquers blemishes, covers up dark circles, and if you aren't naturally flawless, this is your new best friend!

    Created with organic jojoba oil & beeswax, this concealer takes a bit of finger swirling action to warm it up to glide on smoothly. However, once you put it on, it stays in place and will work for you all day long! In fact, I've often found that no foundation is needed once this concealer is utilized, it blends so smoothly into the skin.
