Stokke® Xplory® Stroller

"Designed not only for you and your child, but for your children’s children, and generations to come." Keep your baby close to you, safe and secure, in the Stokke® Xplory® stroller!

Features
Minimalist design with everything you need and nothing you won't use. First and foremost, we'd like you to get down on your hands and knees and look around. Go ahead - what do you see? It's no wonder many children cannot stand being in strollers, there are not a lot of exciting things happening at ground level. Stokke® realized this very important concept - children need more than transportation, they need interaction! The adjustable positioning of this seat allows children to explore the world through a different point of view, encouraging curiosity and learning while providing entertainment. The higher seat height saves your back from unnecessary bending to reach the baby. The lightweight seat also features ample padding for superior comfort and is incredibly simple to flip direction within a few seconds time. The canopy provides exceptional sun protection (SPF 50); one section can be unzipped to reveal netting for ventilation. There is also a pop-out visor extension for protection or privacy. Single lever brake system that involves pressing down for both lock and release (no more pressing upwards with your toes to unlock).

Quality
The Xplory® utilizes the finest in available materials to create a long-lasting, well-built stroller for your family's needs. From the lightweight aluminum frame to the automobile-grade polymers, all materials used in the design are well conceived and implemented. The front tires appear to be a rubber coated foam, while the back tires are rubber. While the high-quality fabric is said to meet all Oeko-Tex Standard 100 standards, official certification has not been pursued for this particular item as of yet. (The Stokke® Sleepi™ is the only Oeko-Tex approved product currently manufactured by this company.)

Ease of Use
Very comfortable to push on smooth surfaces, such as sidewalks. Offroading through park grass proves to be bumpy, though not altogether difficult. To navigate curbs, you must step down backwards with the stroller to ensure the base does not scrape. The adjustable handle height and tilt allows for siblings and parents of varying heights (approx. 42 - 78") to easily and comfortably push the Xplory®. Additionally, the design adjusts to your stride by adjusting height at an angle, providing more stride space between your legs and stroller as the handlebar is adjusted higher; effectively eliminating wheel-kicking incidents!

Environmental Impact
Stokke's mission: To create high quality products, ensure the safety of your child, and protect and preserve your child's environment.

Ongoing effort and commitment: "Throughout the company’s history, we have made every effort and endeavour to use environmentally friendly and biodegradable materials. We also continuously develop and explore new energy saving production techniques, fuel efficient shipping, and distribution methods."

Reduced waste through long-lasting products: "Perhaps the least discussed issue in relating to a product environmental effect is longevity. We create products that are designed to last a lifetime. High production standards, durable and robust materials, flexibility and adjustment options, together with timeless designs, ensure longevity to all our products."

Reduced pollution: "We transport all our products through modern and efficient logistics channels. Based upon warehouse hubs and the principle of moving large stock volumes at a time, we actively reduce transportation rates and frequency, thereby reducing emissions."

Responsible manufacturing: "We actively supervise, every aspect of raw material development, production, and distribution for all our products. Every supplier, business partner, and member of our value chain co‐sign a code of conduct agreement outlining our joint responsibilities, to ensure proper working conditions, compensations, and production methods. As a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative Norway, Stokke is an advocate of ethical trade practices."

Maintenence
All Xplory® fabrics (polyester) are fully removable and machine washable. The rear rubber tires may require replacement after several years of use. 3 year warranty provided.

Storage
While it can be partially folded to reduce the overall required storage space, it does not stand alone when folded. The few latches make it simple to compact this stroller quickly, however the seat must be forward facing or removed for storage. While lifting and opening the stroller can be managed one-handed while holding an infant, it requires both hands to store away. We recommend the Xplory® for those who wish to leave their stroller ready to go on a moment's notice (and who have the space to do so in their home).

Also included are a phthalate-free rain cover (pvc), mosquito net cover, and infant support insert. As your family expands, consider the optional toddler rider board ($119.99 US) which attaches to the rear of the stroller to keep your toddler (up to 44 lbs) nearby. We highly recommended the parent cup holder ($24.99 US) which attaches front and center to the handlebar (we love coordinating Lifefactory® bottles).

Orbit Baby G2® Stroller

As the only stroller with Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 certification, the Orbit Baby G2® is certainly one of the healthiest baby products on the market. Uniquely designed to allow your child to sit in any direction, the G2 encourages your child to participate in their surrounding environment while remaining safely seated in their stroller.

Features
The G2® has one of the tallest built-in canopies we have seen on a stroller and with this, it provides exceptional sun protection - in fact, you can almost completely enclose the baby with simultaneous use of the canopy and pop-out paparazzi shade. Increased air flow through the seat is achieved with an innovative zippered flap with magnets on the back. One of the most unique features offered on this stroller is a 360 degree swivel seat with the ability to face the baby in any direction during strolling, including the side.

Quality
The Orbit Baby G2® is the only stroller to meeting strict Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 certification requirements, even for the polyurethane foam and batting. We like that a portion of the aluminum used in manufacture of the stroller contains recycled content. Other parts are made of virgin plastics, but they are marked with polypropylene or polycarbonate symbols for easy recycling at local centers. The company is also pursuing recycled content fabrics for use in future products and does not currently use flame retardants on their strollers. Overall, the stroller is made of high quality and durable materials. And if you happen to be someone who is into the trendiest product to have, this stroller has quite a celebrity following!

Ease of Use
It is very quick and simple to adjust the recline angle and direction with your baby in the seat. The excellent shock absorption system delivers a smooth ride: click here to read more about it! The wheels are a rubber-coated foam material, meaning you won't have to worry about popping your tires {which did happen with other strollers in testing}. We did note a few drawbacks, mainly involving the canopy. There is a slightly obstructed view due to canopy placement being lower on the seat, however this provides exceptional sun protection so it is a trade off. Due to this, we recommend this stroller for younger children who like to look at parent more than look around or children who are easily intimidated/overwhelmed with too much to see at once. The canopy, due to it's large size and stretchy material, does not remain taut unless fully extended; this leaves folds of fabric to collect at the top of the seat near the child's head. To remedy this, we tucked in the extra canopy fabric into the seat upholstery for evening strolls.

Environmental Impact
Orbit Baby's mission: "To combine sophisticated design with smart function to make world-class solutions for taking your children on the go – sensibly, easily, safely, and always with style. We’ve spent years researching, testing, and working from the ground up to create products that are elegantly simple, intuitive to use and unsurpassed in real-world safety. We apply advanced engineering, innovative design, and high-tech materials to make the best child transportation gear on the planet."

Certified Fabric: "The world’s first stroller with all fabrics and foams certified safe by Oeko-Tex® Standard 100, ensuring they are healthier for your baby and better for the environment."

Durability: "We've accounted for the wear and tear of baby travel by using high-quality materials and designing components to be durable. We go above and beyond standard required tests by designing our own methods to test our products for real-life wear and tear." A longer lasting product eliminates the need for replacements and reduces waste.

Versatility: "Our system is sensibly designed to grow as your baby grows: just swap out your Orbit seat and keep using the rest of our durable system. From a newborn infant to a rambunctious toddler, from a walk in the park to the airport terminal, you can adapt your Orbit travel system to accommodate life's roller-coaster."

Carbon footprint reduction: "Here at Orbit, we strive to be carbon neutral. The first and most important thing we can do is reduce our emissions in the first place. We are selective about our travel and we've installed showers to encourage bike commuting. We also encourage getting to work by carpool, public transit, or hybrid whenever possible. For the travel that we do, Orbit Baby purchases carbon offsets to fund green initiatives in our environment."

PVC-free: "Orbit Baby is proud to offer stroller rain shields made from a clear PVC-free material. With this PVC-free, phthalate-free, and chlorine-free polymer, we can deliver a transparent rain shield solution without the fumes, chemicals, stickiness, and that "shower-curtain smell" associated with PVC. In addition, all Orbit Baby products are free of PVC in the areas that come in contact with you and your child."

Eco-friendly offices: "In addition to using biodegradable utensils and minimal packaging at our office, we recycle all paper, plastic, and cardboard, as well as electronic equipment at authorized recycling centers. Our packaging is designed for efficient transportation and minimal waste; without bleach, plastic windows, or oily dyes, our brown paper boxes are both efficiently made and efficiently recycled."

Maintenence
Spot clean except seat, which is machine washable/line dry. 2 year warranty provided.

Storage
The fold is very easy; the handlebars end up next to the wheel. The seat, however, is best detached from the unit and laid face down on top or fully reclined for the most compact storage. Note: For storage purposes, the seat is approximately the same size as a standard infant carrier car seat if you wish to store it separately from the chassis.

Maclaren® Techno® XT Stroller

As creators of the very first umbrella stroller in 1965 and world's first car seat adaptable stroller in 1991, Maclaren is at the forefront of stroller design and innovation. Designed with comfort and durability in mind, the Maclaren® Techno® XT stroller is definitely one to check out!

Features
Practical design with time-tested durability. In our testing, this stroller earned the silver medal in popularity amongst children (Stokke® Xplory® ranked #1), likely due to Maclaren's exceptional comfort through design and high-quality materials. With four recline options, including nearly flat, this lightweight stroller takes you from newborn to kindergarten (and beyond) with the promise of safety and famaliarity of an old friend. The dual lock brake system activates both brakes simultaneously for safety with an effortless, single toe tap. The canopy provides adequate sun protection; a clear visor extension pops out from under the canopy for increased coverage. Both the sun visor and rear window are protective against UVA and UVB rays. The wheels feature reflectors for evening strolls. The handles are rubber rather than foam coated which makes for quick cleaning and longer wear.

Quality
The seat fabric consists of 100% polyester, which is soft to the touch but also durable. Out of the box there was a fair amount of offgassing odor with this stroller, which seemed to stem mostly from the clear window and sun visor as well as from the seat (possibly from the padding within as the canopy did not have this issue). The lightweight aluminum frame is sturdy. The storage basket is made of a heavier mesh material that feels quite durable despite being mesh. The tires appear to be made of rubber coated foam.

Ease of Use
Dual front and rear suspension make for a smooth ride. Very comfortable to push on smooth surfaces, such as sidewalks. Offroading through park grass proves to be bumpy, though not altogether difficult. Steering one-handed on smooth surfaces is accomplished without much effort. The seat, when reclined, blocks off rear access to the storage basket, however small articles can be accessed through the side or simply stored in the canopy's rear parental organizer pockets. A benefit to the low seat height is that a crawling toddler is able to climb into the seat on their own thanks to the balanced center of gravity, preventing it from tipping over easily (read: less backaches for mommy). The legrest and handles are both adjustable, accomodating the smallest of babies to the tallest of parents!

Environmental Impact
Maclaren's mission: To provide safe, innovative transport to the planet’s youngest citizens based upon a foundation of socially and environmentally responsible practices so the children of today can thrive in the world of tomorrow.

Recycled Packaging: "Through Maclaren sponsored recycling centers for used buggies, a mandate that all packaging contain 70% recycled fiber content with a goal of 100% within 3 years. We believe we can reuse, recycle or rethink the end-of-life use for many of our materials that would have previously be sent to a landfill."

Responsible Manufacturing: Phthalate-free. Lead-free. PVC-free. BFR-free. "A core tenet of our movement is environmentally responsible manufacturing through the use of recyclable materials and the restriction of chemical compounds or materials that harm the environment. All phthalates and lead have been eliminated as well as PVC and brominated flame retardants (BFRs)."

Reduced Carbon Footprint: Our goal is to become “carbon-neutral’ and we have taken the first steps towards achieving this by identifying our primary footprint in indirect emissions and are establishing plans to work globally with a preferred development partner to offset these emissions.

Maintenence
Seat cover is machine washable. Spot clean canopy only. 1 year warranty provided.

Storage
The stroller folds with the front tires touching the front canopy rim, however the 2011 model features easy-to-clean, smooth piping material (which is also reflective) along the canopy virtually eliminating stain concerns. While it can be folded and opened with a single hand, it is much easier to do so with two hands as it takes some time before the stroller is "broken in" enough to do this fluidly without resistance. It does not stand alone when folded; the best way to keep it upright is to hook the handlebars against a ledge or other object. The automatic latch keeps the stroller locked in the folded position for easy pickup and storage. We recommend the Techno® XT for those who are looking for an all-purpose stroller for everyday use while taking up minimal storage space.

Phil & Teds Vibe® Stroller

Award-winning design and convenient features have boosted the Phil and Ted's Vibe® stroller to fame. Appropriately referred to as the "uptown inline" - the trusty Vibe® promises to grow with your family and stick by your side for the long haul.

Features
Sleek and smooth design with the capacity to carry your most precious cargo for years to come! The seat is well-cushioned and extremely comfortable; in fact, there was more than one instance of difficulty in getting children to stay OUT of this particular stroller. The canopy adjusts to any height and various angles, including full-forward tilt, to provide optimum sun protection throughout the day and as your child grows. The newest models also feature a mesh pop-out sun visor for added shade. The hand brake system allows you to engage the wheel locks at the touch of a button without using your feet whatsoever. Perhaps the best feature though, is the Vibe's ability to grow with your family by simply adding a double seat kit to the frame, allowing you to use the same stroller as your family expands!

Quality
The Vibe® uses polyurethane and polyester materials to create ruggedly durable fabrics for the seats; however, the silky soft and cushy seat toppers make this one of the most comfortable rides around! The drawback to the materials used is the heavy off-gassing of fumes you experience out of the box and for the first few uses. The benefit is a long life cycle which reduces the chance you'll ever need another stroller during your childbearing years. With the average family going through an average of six strollers over time, investing in the right choice from the beginning is your best bet to save money and reduce waste!

Ease of Use
Provides an extremely comfortable and smooth ride on most surfaces. Maneuverability is maximized, this stroller can turn on a dime on a moment's notice! Although the stroller expands with your family, the doubles seat kit takes up the storage basket and swaps it out for leg room. Since it's difficult to find a diaper bag that attaches to the handle without hanging down on the head of the child in the doubles seat, you'll likely want to invest in a backpack diaper bag since there is no on-board storage available with the doubles kit attached.

Environmental Impact
Phil and Teds goal: "To be the number one brand of choice for parents, allowing them to continue to lead a dynamic and active lifestyle, with kids in tow!"

Ongoing effort and commitment: "We take back pre-loved buggies, service them, spruce them up & donate them back into the community to a deserving cause!"

Reduced packaging materials: Of all the strollers we have tested and reviewed, this one had the least amount of packaging waste!

Reduced waste through durable, adaptable products: Being built to last and growing old with your family never looked so good!

Maintenence
Hand wash; air dry. The rubber tires may require replacement from regular use. 1 year warranty provided.

Storage
Compact fold can be achieved with doubles seat kit attached. Another great feature is the ability to easily wheel this stroller by the handlebar around while folded.

Bumbleride® Indie® Natural Edition Stroller

Bumbleride® wants to get your family out and about in style with their eco-friendly Indie® Natural Edition stroller. Made from recycled aluminum, recycled polyester, and recycled plastics - this sporty stroller begs to be seen everywhere from the soccer fields to the beach boardwalk!

Features
The Indie® Natural Edition seat reclines completely flat, making this a practical choice for napping infants. The canopy can be adjusted forward to block the sun at multiple angles and provides SPF 45 protection. The storage basket (18" x 15" x 10” DWH) is adequately sized for a larger diaper bag with the mesh basket opening to the rear rather than to the top as most, optimizing accessibility. We found that this works great for tossing in soccer balls or other toys for park trips! The front wheel locks allowing this stroller to function as a lightweight jogger for exercise purposes. Our favorite feature? The compact fold is smaller and tighter with dual locks, allowing smaller trunks to easily accommodate the Indie® for storage and travel.

Quality
The aluminum frame consists of up to 20% recycled metals and has proven to be efficiently lightweight and sturdy. The Indie® Natural Edition features 50% recycled material on the canopy as well as 50% sustainably produced bamboo fiber on the seating surfaces, maximizing moisture absorption while naturally inhibiting bacterial growth (an innate property of untreated bamboo). We contacted the company regarding mislabeled tags stating all fabrics and filling consist of 100% polyester on the stroller we received and were assured that newer labels have been corrected to reflect recycled and bamboo content.

While the materials are easy to wipe clean of crumbs and debris from everyday use, they lack the feeling of substantial quality. The fabric feels much like a softer version of the disposable pillowcases offered by airlines for in-flight use. The underlying foam is thin and bends out of shape easily. Overall, the quality of textiles used begs the question of longevity through repeated uses. On the bright side, no fire retardants are used on the fabric which means less chemical exposure for your little one. We suggest investing in a soft, organic stroller liner for long term use with the Indie® Natural Edition stroller for increased comfort and appeal.

Ease of Use
The best feature of this stroller is the extremely easy maneuverability it provides - gliding across the ground and turning on a dime! This stroller was tested during a marathon; the tester complimented the smooth ride, noting her wrists did not hurt from vibrations as she is accustomed to with her regular stroller. A few times when running on bumpier surfaces, the back wheel lock bar engaged suddenly and unintentionally; we were unable to determine the cause or if any defect is present.

Initial setup out of the box took approximately 30 minutes and required detailed instructions; we'd like to see the strollers delivered mostly assembled for busy parents on the go! Strap adjustments require complete re-threading of straps through buckles to adjust to proper height, there are no shortcuts – it would be time intensive to adjust this stroller for multiple children on any regular basis. The straps are excessively long and there is no method of storage for the additional length. For example, adjusting to a typical one year old child allowed for 4 straps "tails" of 9” length each leftover, simply hanging across the child; this makes it prone to tangling and does not provide a finished look. We would like to see attached elastic bands to roll the additional strap lengths into once adjusted and easier strap height adjustment.

The height and shape of the canopy limits usability for older or taller children, restricting their view (see dimensions section for actual measurements). However, for smaller/shorter children, we love the mesh ventilation window on top of the canopy. We like the option of removal of the back of the canopy for maximum ventilation in summer, although at the cost of the parental storage pocket - we'd like to see a ventilation design that doesn't sacrifice the much-needed parental storage!

The complaint we most often heard was about the adjustable footrest, which inevitably locks in an upward position every time you unfold the stroller for use. The buttons you must depress to release the footrest lock are hidden on the underside and difficult to push simultaneously. We would like to see this feature improved upon, possibly by relocating the footrest buttons to the outside of the stroller for easy access.

The child's multi-use bar locks at unusual positions: the higher position blocks the view of younger children near eye level, but the lower position places the bar at too great of a distance from younger children and too low (laying across legs) of older children. We also did not like the foam covered handle, which becomes tacky in hot and humid weather. The thick air-filled rubber tires offer 12” diameter and plenty of traction for both on and off road; on the down side, the innertube can deflate and pop just as that in a bicycle tire so you must operate cautiously. We would like to see Bumbleride® incorporate recycled rubber into their tires.

Despite the smooth ride, our toddler testers were uncomfortable riding in the Bumblebee Indie. During our first tests, we discovered a defective tire and had it replaced. Subsequent tests resulted in a lot of continued crying and complaints, which we did not experience with other strollers in our comparative reviews. Every child is different, therefore your experience may vary; unfortunately, in our tests, the Bumbleride Indie provided the least positive child reaction.

Environmental Impact
Bumbleride values innovation, design, and above all, aims to provide an unsurpassed customer experience! To make it "just a little bit easier for families to get outside and be active together, and that goal is the motivation behind [their] innovative thinking."

Charitable efforts: "We give used product new life by donating to different charities and organizations, some of which include Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego and their NICU, Baby Buggy, and an orphanage in Mexico."

Recycling : Recycling of returned and damaged strollers which cannot be donated, packaging materials, and paper, plastic, and glass goods from their office. Indie strollers are currently manufactured utilizing recycled aluminum, recycled polyester, and recycled plastic (for the backrest/seat boards).

Community Outreach: Project Bumbleride gives back to hospitals, parks, beaches, museums, schools and other family-centered organizations throughout the U.S. Recently, they hosted two public beach cleanups at a local beach for Earth Day to help teach children the importance of protecting our environment. Promotion of this program is made through sustainble offerings such as reusable canvas shopping bags.

Maintenence
Seat cover is removable and machine washable (cold), air dry. Spot clean canopy. The air-filled rubber tires are subject to replacement with use. 1 year warranty provided.

Storage
The Indie® leads the pack when it comes to compact fold for storage. The two side latches secure the stroller in a locked fold, and you can carry it through narrow openings by the handlebar or carry strap.

Accessories
Tiltable parental cupholder is included, however it attaches to the side of the stroller and sticks out about 4” - just enough to tip over anytime you bump against a doorway or rack at the store. We also had a problem, with the canopy collapsed indoors, of the children reaching for and tipping over the cupholder, spilling contents. For these reasons, we only recommend using cold water or spillproof container when using the cupholder (for staining and safety purposes). Available for optional purchase: carrycot, rainshield (pvc-free), snack tray, footmuff and liner, and travel case.

Recommended for: Small children who prefer to recline with no handlebar; Sporty mamas with petite babies; Compact car owners; Babies who like to stroll the beach boardwalk
